Minnesota Fires Tubby Smith

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tubby Smith was hailed as a rescuer when he came to Minnesota from Kentucky in 2007, a championship-certified coach who would restore a once-proud program to respectability after it was brought down by scandal.

For the past few years, Tubby Smith's Minnesota occupancy has inspired two schools of thought. Some have argued the Gophers can do better than a coach whose teams consistently start strong release to waste away to the NCAA tournament bubble or off it every February.

Despite winning the team's first NCAA Tournament game since 1997 — and that win was vacated — Tubby Smith has been fired at Minnesota.

Tubby Smith was fired by Minnesota Monday after doing better than his predecessors, not the first time a school has failed to appreciate the job the national championship-winner has done.

Before we get to the Tubby Smith stuff, let's cover some other significant events unfolding at the U. Women's Hockey. This team went 41-0 and won their 2nd national championship in a row. That is impressive and it should be a huge transact business. Unfortuantely
